Japanese garden in "Seepark"

Freiburg's Japanese garden, idyllically situated by the Seepark, was planned by the Japanese garden architect Yoshinori Tokumoto from Matsuyama as a partnership gift for the people of Freiburg and created in 1990 by three Japanese and 10 Freiburg gardeners.

Gardeners from the Freiburg Garden Office also learned the special care of these gardens, in particular the pruning, training and tying of the trees and shrubs, at Yoshinori Tokumoto's horticultural company in Matsuyama. The overarching story of the garden is a watercourse that flows from its source high up in the mountains over a waterfall through broad river landscapes into the sea (Lake Flückiger). The large rocks in the garden were selected by the Japanese gardeners at Schauinsland, the pebbles come from a gravel works on the Rhine, the plants from the Freiburg city nursery and the stone lanterns are originals from Japan. Traditionally, the Japanese Garden is intended to be a place of peace and tranquillity and, with its location by the Seepark, offers an ideal retreat for those seeking peace and quiet.
