Japanese Garden in the "Seepark"

Situated in the idyllic location of the Seepark, Freiburg's Japanese Garden was planned by the Japanese landscape architect Yoshinori Tokumoto as a gift for Freiburg's citizens from its twin town of Matsuyama.

It was built in 1990 in a project involving three landscape gardeners from Japan and ten from Freiburg. The Freiburg city gardeners were given training in the special care required for these gardens, in particular, how to prune, brace and tie the trees and shrubs, at Yoshinori Tokumoto's horticultural business in Matsuyama.

The overarching feature of the garden is a watercourse that flows into the ocean (the Flückigersee lake) from the source high up in the mountains, over a waterfall and through wide river landscapes. The Japanese landscapers sourced the garden's large boulders from the Schauinsland mountain, the pebbles come from a gravel quarry on the Rhine, the plants come from the Freiburg city gardens and the stone lanterns are originals from Japan. Traditionally, the Japanese Garden is intended to be a place of peace and tranquility. Its location at the Seepark provides an ideal haven for anyone seeking calm and solitude.
