Have fun: Jacques Offenbach
Paris in the 1860s was more operetta-like than operetta could ever be. All of Paris seemed to be in a frenzy of pleasure. Right in the middle of it all was Jacques Offenbach, the forefather of operetta, who held his own as an entertainer and top producer in Parisian showbiz and held up a mirror to the public every day with his satirical entertainment spectacles. But just like today, the debauched, decadent party life was celebrated at the price of exploitation. Who plays the keyboard of power, money and influence - and what role does showbiz play in this? Monika Gintersdorfer addresses these questions with her transnational dance and theater group La Fleur and the Freiburg ensemble, who make the operetta dance from cancan to Afrobeats. They all trace the rebellious spirit of operetta, which still throws the radical idea of freedom into the round today.
