Wentzingerhaus (Museum of municipal history)

Experience firsthand the life of an artist from the 18th century at Freiburg’s Museum of Municipal History.

In building his “Zum Schönen Eck” house in 1761, the painter and sculptor erected a monument to himself. Today, his smiling bust on the balcony watches over the entrance to the building, which has been perfectly preserved over the centuries. Impressive masked heads decorate the facade, sculpted by Wentzinger and evidence of his great talent.

Behind the heavy wooden door lies the magnificent late Baroque studio and residence of the Breisgau artist Johann Christian Wentzinger. The elaborate stairway with its cast-iron two-story spiral staircase and the artfully decorated mezzanine are crowned by an allegorical ceiling fresco by the home owner and painter.

But not only will you have the chance to admire the works of Wentzinger in this sumptuous setting, you can also embark on a trip through the history of Freiburg. The museum exhibits take you on a tour of the city’s past: from its founding in 1120 to the building of the cathedral, the wars of the 17th century right up to the present day.

The Wentzingerhaus is an exciting journey through art history and the story of Freiburg.
