When vision deteriorates - eye diseases (lecture)

In cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians - With increasing age, vision can deteriorate due to illness. The most common causes of reduced vision are the development of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD - a disease of the central retina) and the increased occurrence of glaucoma. In cataracts, the eye's own lens becomes cloudy. The cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens in an operation that is now very safe and less stressful. In order to preserve vision in the case of macular degeneration, it is crucial to detect the disease as early as possible. In the wet form of AMD, the disease can be halted or at least the course of the disease can be positively influenced by injecting special medication into the affected eye. In the early stages, glaucoma does not cause any discomfort or noticeable visual impairment. Diagnosis of the early stages is often difficult. Patients should have regular check-ups. Glaucoma can be treated with medication using eye drops, laser therapy or surgery. After the lecture, there will be an opportunity to ask the speaker questions.
