Sphärengesang - Sold-out concerts all over the world, millions of clicks on YouTube, thousands and thousands of enthusiastic young people in educational workshops: Wherever Voces8 are at work, sparks fly. Gramophone magazine praised the singing of the eight-piece troupe as "impeccable in its sound quality and balance", whose timing and tuning lend a new dimension to the word 'ensemble'. This is undoubtedly true - and yet only half the truth: for more than 20 years, every performance has proven anew that perfection and liveliness need not be opposites. It is also the ever-fresh joy of making and sharing music, coupled with curiosity and openness, that makes Voces8's concerts an experience for both sides.
In the current concert program "Nightfall", the British vocal ensemble brings together pieces from across the centuries that are inspired by the dark half of the day in all its facets. "For all those who want to entrust their thoughts to more than just their pillows in dreams, a different time period opens up after dark," is how Elisabeth Bronfen describes this cosmos of secrets and borderline experiences in her "Cultural History of the Night". The night - the place of the moon and the stars, of solitude, dreams, fears and prayers - has always inspired poetry and music to create particularly exquisite works. Voces8's program is correspondingly wide-ranging: from the Renaissance and Romanticism to contemporary choral music, plus a selection of arrangements from pop and jazz with swing melodies and ballads. And, as is well known, the "Rolls-Royce of British a cappella ensembles" likes to climb into an Aston Martin itself - with cleverly interlaced James Bond songs.
