Televisionary Talk Club: The Pitt

A discussion with Friederike Zoe Grasshoff of the *Süddeutsche Zeitung*, Dr. René Freudenthal, and Sabine Pawletta at the Carl Schurz House | As part of the “Televisionary Talk Club”

What defines “The Pitt” are the shrill monitor alarms, the blood-stained lab coats, and the utter exhaustion of the lifesavers under the relentless, constant glow of the fluorescent lights. Not exactly the setting for feel-good TV—or so you’d think! But while the five-Emmy-winning HBO series is celebrated as the most unsparing “Emergency Room” in TV history, it has long since sparked a very different frenzy online: the accusation that it’s too “woke.” On the “Televisionary Talk Club,” hosts Sabine Pawletta and René Freudenthal tackle this series phenomenon—the real-time ER that has become a TV smash hit, showing one hour of a single, never-ending shift per episode. Is the backlash against the audience favorite “The Pitt” a genuine disagreement over realism and representation in “medical dramas,” or simply the price every series pays for taking a (too) close look? Journalist Friederike-Zoë Grasshoff of the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” dissects with the hosts how the most honest “ER” in the entire streaming business became the central “stage of the present,” as she wrote in an essay. Grasshoff knows exactly what she’s talking about—before she (also) began writing about television herself, she spent years as a teenager in front of the camera as a star of the RTL hospital series “Nikola,” which drew millions of viewers, before studying literature in Freiburg, among other subjects. The motto of the “Televisionary Talk Club”: Sophisticated? Definitely. Serious? Only where it needs to be.
