Sternwald
The Sternwald is Freiburg's popular local recreation area on the Bromberg, featuring idyllic forest trails, scenic overlooks, and the historic Wasserschlössle (water castle).
The Sternwald is one of Freiburg’s most beautiful recreational areas near the city. Located on the southern edge of the Wiehre district, this expansive wooded area stretches across the forested slopes of the Brombergkopf and combines nature experiences, physical activity, and impressive views of the city.
A dense network of forest roads and nature trails invites visitors to take walks, go for runs, and enjoy short hikes. Popular destinations include the Sternwaldeck, which offers a view of Freiburg, the Sternwaldwiese, and the idyllically situated Wasserschlössle (water castle). This striking structure, built in 1895, serves as an elevated reservoir for Freiburg’s drinking water supply and also offers one of the city’s most beautiful vantage points.
The forest owes its name to the former country inn “Zum Sternen,” which once stood near the old Wiehre railway station. Today, the Sternwald is an important natural area and a retreat for those seeking relaxation, just a few minutes from downtown Freiburg. Families, walkers, joggers, and nature lovers will find a variety of trails and peaceful spots surrounded by greenery here in every season.
