Speaking
You have a thought in your head. It absolutely has to get out into the world. You take a deep breath. Now what? Maybe you position your diaphragm and larynx. Your tongue comes to life. Your lips join in. Maybe you bring your fingers into play, drawing things in the air. You pull your shoulders up toward your ears. You raise your arms. You nod your head. Your body begins to speak. You speak very quickly because you’re excited. Or you speak very slowly because you want the world to understand your thoughts exactly. In this dance piece, professional and non-professional performers explore how we engage in conversation with one another—and who understands what and how. Among other things, the piece experiments with spoken language and sign language.
