Schlossbergturm (castle hill tower)

From Freiburg city center, you can either walk up the Schlossberg or save yourself the effort of climbing the tower and take the Schlossbergbahn, which will take you to Freiburg's local recreation area in just a few minutes. From the mountain station, the first ascent is via Kanonenplatz. The 251 steps of the Salzbüchsletreppe ("Salzbüchsle" stairway) take you to the summit of the same name and thus to the foot of the Schlossberg tower. The construction of the 35-metre-high observation tower was mainly financed by donations, so you will read the names of all the donors on the front of the steps as you climb. Once you reach the top, you will soon realize that the effort was worth it. Just under 200 meters above Freiburg, you have a unique view over the city to the green valleys, vineyards and rivers of Breisgau.
