The First World War in contemporary French literature
The First World War is still a productive place of remembrance (lieu de mémoire) in France today, which is reflected not least in the contemporary literature of our neighbors. Henri Barbus's 1916 novel Le feu is regarded as a canonical original text that had a decisive influence on the theme of the First World War. Based on this, the lecture will first outline the literary development of the topic in the 20th century. Using selected narrative texts from the last 20 years, it will then explain the extent to which narrative processes and the temporal and spatial expansion of the topic have contributed to the Grande Guerre losing none of its relevance as a literary focal point of current issues in 100 years.
