Matthias Maierhofer has been a professor of organ at the Freiburg University of Music since 2016 and serves as cathedral organist at the Cathedral of Our Lady in Freiburg. He studied organ, early music, and church music at the universities of Graz, Freiburg, and Leipzig, as well as at the Schola Cantorum in Basel. Even while still a student, he won prizes at international organ competitions in Arnstadt, Kitzbühel, Nijmegen, Nuremberg, and Vilnius, which enabled him to pursue an active concert career throughout Europe, the U.S., Russia, China, Japan, and South Korea. As a soloist and continuo player, Matthias Maierhofer has performed with ensembles such as the Dresden Kreuzchor, the St. Thomas Choir of Leipzig, the Staatskapelle Dresden, and the Staatskapelle Halle. He has contributed to CD productions and publications by Edition Helbling, and his recordings are available from various radio stations and the labels Ambitus, Ambiente, and Spektral. From 2009 to 2013, he led an organ class at the “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” College of Music in Leipzig; In 2013, Matthias Maierhofer was appointed to the professorship of organ and church music at the University of Texas at Austin (USA)—where, in 2015, he was named a Dean’s Fellow in recognition of his pedagogical achievements and awarded the Ducloux Fellowship from the College of Fine Arts. Matthias Maierhofer regularly teaches master classes and serves as a juror at organ competitions.
