When Waleria learns that she cannot have children, it triggers something unexpected in her, even though she has never felt the desire to have children: what does it mean to be the last in her family's line of generations? Her grandmother Marianna, born during the Second World War, was a farmer's wife. Her mother Róza, influenced by the socialist People's Republic of Poland, also grew up in the countryside. By chance, she gets to know the city of Gdansk and life in the midst of the Solidarity revolution and leaves Poland at the end of the 1980s for West Germany, where Waleria grows up.
Freiburg-based author Oliwia Hälterlein cleverly interweaves the stories of three generations in her debut novel "Wir Töchter" (C.H. Beck, 2026). She tells of daughters and mothers, bodies and language, origins and the future. Moderation: Hanna Hovtvian.
