A Must-Do Experience – The Detention Cells at the University Campus Freiburg

A “Karzer” was a student prison. And anyone who thinks that universities used to deprive students of their freedom in a terrible way… is right! At least that was true for the first few centuries. Later, however, this punishment became more of an honor, and students were eager to demonstrate in word and deed that they had earned it. Any student who considered himself someone around 1900 had to leave his mark in the guestbook on the Karzerwand at least once during his studies.

Even today, you simply have to have experienced the Karzer at least once, because Freiburg’s former Karzer cells offer a unique treasure. Once a month, on every second Sunday, we slide back the heavy iron bolts, open the gate, and invite you to an open Karzer tour—to which individuals and small groups are also warmly welcome!
