Welcome to Vienna - Cellist Raphaela Gromes and her piano partner Julian Riem have already proven that they love going on expeditions at the Freiburg Guest Performance 2025. Together with Canadian cosmopolitan Sarah McElravy and the renowned Julian Rachlin, this time the journey takes them to his childhood home of Vienna. On their tour of the musical metropolis on the Danube, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is not to be missed: The Viennese publishers hoped that he would compose catchy piano pieces with harmless string accompaniment that would sell well. Mozart, however, defied these expectations and challenged conventional ideas with clever dialogs such as the Quartet in E flat major and its virtuoso web of motifs. Gustav Mahler plays the painful first movement of a quartet from his time at the Vienna Conservatory, his only contribution to instrumental chamber music. Finally, the passionate Piano Quartet in A major op. 26 was the first work that Johannes Brahms had premiered in his last hometown of Vienna.
