This year's program of the Junge Kammerphilharmonie Rhein-Neckar, which won the German Orchestra Competition for the third time last year with the highest possible score and is 1st prize winner of the renowned "Summa Cum Laude" orchestra competition, focuses on the fascinating world of timbres.
The concert opens with the overture to The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. From the lively world of Papageno to the glittering sphere of the Queen of the Night and the mysterious aura of Sarastro, changing nuances of sound unfold and open up Mozart's fairytale world.
Impulsiveness, powerful vitality and a penchant for wit and sarcasm characterize the work of Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz. Her Concerto for String Orchestra (1948), one of her most successful works, was written after the Second World War in the field of tension between tradition and modernity and makes particularly brilliant use of the tonal possibilities of the strings.
The situation was different for Max Bruch around thirty years earlier: He too was living at the end of a world war - but at the same time at the end of his life and artistic career. His second string quintet is entirely in the late Romantic style: warm, full tone colors and a continuous motivic development define the music. While Bacewicz was driven by new sound experiments, Bruch here reaffirms the aesthetic aspirations of his musical past.
The only string quartet by Maurice Ravel forms the finale. Impressionistic colors, refined playing techniques and seemingly improvisational freedom combine to create a dazzling sound painting.
The result is a concert evening that ranges from classical clarity and romantic expressiveness to modern colorfulness - a musical journey of discovery through the most diverse worlds of sound.
