International organ concerts in Freiburg Minster
This series of organ concerts has been an integral part of Freiburg's summer cultural life for over 90 years. The unique organ installation in the wonderful space of the cathedral is a magnet for outstanding international performers and organ enthusiasts from all over the world. The concert organist and international prizewinner Maria Mokhova was born in Gorki (now Nizhny Novgorod again) in Russia. She began playing the piano at the age of six in the class of Prof. Bella Alterman and took her first organ lessons with Tatjana Botchkova at the age of eleven.
From 1999 to 2004, she studied piano and organ at the conservatory in her home town, graduating with honors. In 2006, she came to Germany and studied organ at the College of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main with Prof. Martin Sander. From 2008 she studied at the HfK Heidelberg and graduated (also with Martin Sander) from the soloist class with distinction.
Courses with Ewald Kooiman, Hans Fagius, Lorenzo Ghielmi, Joris Verdin, Ludger Lohmann, Wolfgang Zerer, Johann Trummer and Thierry Escaich, among others, rounded off her training.
She has won several prizes at international organ competitions, including 1st prize at the Petr Eben International Organ Competition in Opava, 2nd prize (1st prize not awarded) at the 58th Prague Spring International Music Competition, 2nd prize at the 56th Musica Sacra International Organ Competition in Nuremberg and 1st prize at the International Organ Competition in Rome.
Maria Mokhova has been teaching organ literature at the Heidelberg University of Church Music since 2017 and regularly performs in Russia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Austria, Italy, Slovakia, Switzerland, Brazil and Israel.
