Geraldine Oetken: Frieda — Reading and Discussion with Julia Wolrab as part of the "Gegenworte" series

Frieda, whom no one has ever spoken of. About whom no one knows anything more than that she died in 1941 in an institution for people with disabilities. When Geraldine Oetken learns of her great-great-aunt, she sets out to uncover her story, with empathy and meticulous care: She reads medical records and researches how mental illness was treated under the Nazis, as well as decentralized “euthanasia” and starvation killings. Her search for clues takes her to archives and cemeteries, to the Oldenburg of the Nazis and the Oldenburg of her youth—and into the depths of her own family history. Geraldine Oetken, an artist and journalist living in Hanover, will speak with Julia Wolrab, director of the Documentation Center on National Socialism, about her first book and her work to combat forgetting.
