A huge horde of elephants in the middle of Berlin? In response to the German government's ban on the import of big game hunting trophies, the President of Botswana sends 20,000 elephants to the capital, posing enormous challenges for the Federal Chancellor. The accusation: "You Europeans want to tell us how we should live. Maybe you should try it yourselves."
With her new novel "The Gift" (Zsolnay, 2025, translated from Dutch by Lisa Mensing), Gaea Schoeters has achieved a feat: a story full of witty humor meets discourse on post-colonialism and climate change. On 144 pages, the Flemish author of the sensational success "The Trophy" creates a clever, entertaining political satire that illuminates "how much the European view is still colonial" (SWR). The evening will be hosted by literary mediator Luzia Stettler.
