Discover an extraordinary place that is much more than just a park on a guided tour of the old cemetery in Freiburg. The history of Freiburg unfolds impressively between old trees and artistic gravestones. Important personalities and famous newcomers who shaped the cityscape between the 17th and 19th centuries rest here. The old cemetery is considered a unique testimony to historical burial art and offers rare insights into how it has changed over the centuries.
Your walk begins at the entrance in Stadtstraße.
Over 1100 gravestones tell of times gone by - from magnificent stone monuments and intricately crafted metal crosses to simple wooden crosses. After being closed as a place of worship in the late 19th century, the area was transformed into a green park. During the guided tour, you will learn why the preservation of this special place is thanks to the Freiburg architect and artist Johann Christian Wentzinger, whose grave you will also visit.
The Michaelskapelle, an impressive example of the revival of historic buildings after the Second World War, is one of the highlights, as are the venerable Lothar-Platane and a memorial stone to the revolutionaries of 1848/1849.
Naturally, the themed city tour leads to the famous grave of the 'Sleeping Girl', which still inspires numerous legends today.
