Tips for your stroll through Freiburg

Shopping in Freiburg: This means strolling down picturesque lanes, past charming boutiques and locally-owned stores, shopping in prestigious stores on the KaJo shopping street and of course discovering a variety of regional products at the Cathedral Market.

Freiburg offers a wide selection of shopping options with a very special atmosphere in a historic setting.

Freiburg's shopping treasures

Combine culture and shopping in your stroll through Old Town, because a leisurely walk along the Bächle will take you past beautifully restored houses, historical buildings and charming shops.

Even today, Schusterstrasse is still a place for handicrafts. In the small street that runs parallel to Salzstrasse you will find leather goods, arts and crafts, an old-established goldsmith and a second-hand bookshop. You can't miss the colorful facades of the houses and the balconies and windows decorated with flowers.

Herrenstrasse takes you to the upper Old Town where you will find many small shops from artists' materials to jewelry and women's and men's fashion. Stroll along the famous Augustinerplatz which invites you to relax on summer evenings or visit the well-known Augustiner museum.

You will find the entrance to the Freiburg Markthalle, which lays somewhat hidden, in a courtyard off Grünwälderstrasse. Here you can feast your way through the entire world; at more than 20 stands, chefs conjure up regional dishes as well as countless delicacies from Latin America, Asia and the Orient for hungry locals and guests.

Tradition and indulgence in Klein Venedig (Little Venice)

Time seems to stand still in Klein Venedig and it doesn't take much imagination to visualize how all types of skilled tradesmen worked in the former Schneckenvorstadt district. The water of the Dreisam River was diverted right to the businesses of the millers, tanners and fishermen via numerous canals. The water still splashes through the picturesque narrow streets of the Gerberau, Fischerau and the island.

Here you have countless opportunities to enjoy a cup of coffee or eat a savory meal. Cafés, pastry shops, restaurants and beer gardens invite you to linger and the small boutiques are definitely worth a visit. Shake the paw of Mr. von Räudenfell, the fox, in the Barleben puppet store or discover hats, accessories or high quality decorative items in the unusual shops of Klein Venedig.

Konviktstrasse - the most beautiful shopping street in Freiburg

Konviktstraße is now a jewel of Freiburg’s Old Town restoration. The closely aligned, medieval houses were restored with great attention to detail. Cafés and restaurants in the flower-adorned Konviktstrasse invite you to enjoy the Freiburg sun and the Old Town atmosphere. The small shops are mainly occupied by antique dealers. Here you will also find textile art, delicacies and elegant boutiques.

Main shopping street KaJo - Major Brands

You will find a variety of fashion and sports shops as well as department stores like Breuninger or Kaufhof on Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse, Bertholdstrasse and Salzstrasse, the major axes of the Freiburg pedestrian zone. Big brand labels, but also a few selected specialized shops offer you a wide selection.

Both well-known and old-established shops are also located on Salzstrasse, one of the oldest and most important commercial streets in Freiburg. For all bookworms, we recommend a visit to the Wetzstein bookstore, which was founded in 1978. In addition to genuine classics, there is a department with signed books and some rarities.

Freiburg Cathedral Market

A market for genuine foodies. Seasonal, regional, colorful - you will find fruits and vegetables from the Breisgau region as well as Baden specialties, meat and sausage products, cheese and fish.

And let's not forget the famous "lange Rote". Find out at which stand the famous Freiburg sausage tastes the best!

Enjoy a walk through Freiburg's most beautiful weekly market at the Münsterplatz. You can always glance at the impressive church, admire the gargoyles and look high in the sky at the "most beautiful church tower of Christianity".

The hustle and bustle of the Cathedral Market can also be observed from one of the adjoining cafés or while enjoying a Baden wine at the Alte Wache.

Market days are from Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm and on Saturday from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm. Further information about the Freiburg Cathedral Market and the other Freiburg district markets can be found hier.
