Erwin Pelzig - Who We Will Become
When people wake up in the morning and have to wonder which crisis will be the most important one today, that isn’t without consequences. Social psychologists now say we’re experiencing “change fatigue.”
In Frank-Markus Barwasser’s latest program, his alter ego Erwin Pelzig therefore explores the question of what the much-discussed “change fatigue” does to us: who we become in a time of fundamental change. People have never liked such changes; they have always signified danger, risk, and uncertainty. In such times, realism, reason, and composure have rarely been in vogue; instead, it has always been the hour of the prophets of doom and apocalypticists, who have been highly successful in capitalizing on the fears and longings of frightened people. But merely describing and lamenting the problems is not an option for someone like Pelzig. That is why he—as always, accompanied by his two friends, Hartmut and Dr. Göbel—seeks a different way to cope with a world gone haywire. This leads him not least into the well-explored realm of brain research, into the uncharted expanses of the universe, and into the intellectual world of knowledgeable Stoic philosophers.
Erwin Pelzig: “Sometimes you might think you only have the choice between going crazy or becoming religious. I’ve tried it. I can’t recommend either.”
Frank-Markus Barwasser has been performing on Germany’s theater stages with his stage persona for over 30 years. The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote: “The voice of the boisterous Stoic, the combative empath, the down-to-earth, level-headed man who nevertheless doesn’t think he knows it all—the voice of the ordinary person who knows that, in his own way, he’s crazy.” Barwasser most recently produced the nine-part series “Beim Pelzig auf der Bank” for 3SAT.
