Chamber Jazz Quartet

Michael Pöhlmann’s Chamber Jazz Quartet is always good for a surprise: it can transition seemingly effortlessly from a power play in the finest hard bop tradition to chamber music featuring four equally prominent voices. They bring stories to life that carry the music right into the audience. Bass legend Steve Swallow praised the bandleader’s compositions for their “graceful harmonic motion.”

Firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, they draw from many sources: the symphonic ambition of Charles Mingus shines through, as do Ellington’s harmonic freedom, the rigor of Astor Piazzolla—
—and, in Franz Schubert’s “Montuno,” even a melody from the Romantic era.
