Canadian Brass

An evening full of encores - Bach, Bizet and the Beatles meet in concert ... It sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it is the recipe for success in the never-ending story of Canadian Brass. Founded in the 1970s, the quintet, recruited from top North American soloists, stirs up the dust even in the most hidden corners of concert halls. With inexhaustible wit and knowledge, founding member and tuba player Chuck Daellenbach leads through a program that demands not only lively leaps through styles and centuries from his colleagues, but also all available - and non-existent - athletic abilities. Putting a concert like this into words - as the musicians themselves admit - is like trying to teach someone how to juggle over the phone. Accordingly, journalists also have to get creative and try to describe the lively troupe with honorary titles such as "court jesters of chamber music" or "the Marx Brothers of sheet metal".

Anyone with more than 50 years of stage experience and over 5,000 concerts to their name is spoiled for choice when it comes to naming highlights. But Daellenbach can think of a few, including being awarded the ECHO prize for the Canadian Brass version of the Goldberg Variations: "To be honored by Germany for music from Germany is really worth something." High praise indeed, given the more than two dozen nominations Canadian Brass has already collected - for the many recordings that document their brilliant repertoire of original literature, arrangements and commissioned works. A rich and constantly growing treasure into which the quintet is constantly diving headfirst. And so the fabulous five like to start their concert with the first encore - because who knows if there will be time for it at the end!
