Bow-Making Workshop
In a small group, under the expert guidance of archaeologist and bow-making expert Dr. Jürgen Junkmann, you’ll craft your own high-performance bow from start to finish. The bows are made entirely of wood from a single piece of timber. You’ll twist your own bowstring. You’ll learn how to make wooden arrows. You’ll fletch your arrows with natural feathers without using a fletching machine. You’ll shape your hickory bow blank yourself using rasps, files, planes, draw knives, and scrapers. Step by step, you’ll build your own bow. After tilling—the process that gives the bow its draw weight—it is sanded smooth and oiled. Learn to make your own wooden arrows with natural fletching—without plastic nocks. Then we’ll test-shoot our new bows and arrows! The choice is yours: during the workshop, you can build one of 9 different bow types true to the original—from the bow of a Mesolithic hunter to the medieval longbow. You decide how powerful your bow will be: draw weights ranging from 25 to 75 pounds are possible (more powerful bows available for an additional fee).
Course fee: 250 €
(includes materials and course instruction. €150 for children’s bows for participants up to 1.5 m in height
