There are moments when Freiburg is simply unmistakably good. When you watch the sun set over the cathedral tower or enjoy a Lange Rote at the Münstermarkt (cathedral market) and strike up a conversation with the market traders. Or a stroll through the old town centre, which takes you to the Black Forest within minutes.
Many things come together perfectly here: the location between the Rhine plain and the slopes of the Black Forest, a lively cultural landscape, the cosmopolitan attitude of a colourful, forward-looking university city and, of course, the desire to enjoy life. The result is that very special Freiburg feeling - it has already made many people fall in love with this city. Again and again.
From 1 January 2026, the city of Freiburg will levy a packaging tax on disposable packaging for food and drinks. This affects, among other things, disposable cups, crockery and cutlery used for the sale of to-go offers. By introducing the tax, the city is aiming to significantly reduce the amount of waste in public spaces and promote the switch to environmentally friendly reusable systems.
Freiburg is thus sending a clear signal in favour of sustainability, resource conservation and a clean cityscape. Catering businesses, visitors and locals are invited to actively follow this path and contribute to a liveable and sustainable city by using reusable options.
