The lecture is dedicated to the development of road connections from mule tracks and cart paths to highways, using examples from the region and the Alps. It explains why walking or driving on certain sections of road could become a dangerous adventure for centuries, but also how the introduction of "artificial roads" revolutionized transport in the 19th century. Historical views and maps impressively illustrate the high value that was placed on a harmonious combination of roads, landscape and townscape in road construction until a few decades ago, despite increasing mechanization - and how these principles were radically abandoned in the 1970s. - Registration required.
