The Mexican Son Rompe Pera inspire with their cumbia punk and at the same time the highest level of virtuosity on the marimba. The Gama brothers began playing the traditional marimba as children. When youthful rebellion struck, however, they turned to punk and psychobilly. Now they have come full circle and are at the forefront of the contemporary international cumbia scene with their musical fusion of rock music and the classical instrument.
During live shows, the garage-cumbia-marimba-punk band never disappoints and makes dance lovers sweat. Their authenticity is evident in their modern interpretations of Mexican, Peruvian and Colombian classics as well as in their own tracks and surprising covers. The contrast between the traditional marimba with its youthful attitude and street style connects the audience with the past as they dance into the future.
Son Rompe Pera released their debut album in March 2020, just as the Covid-19 pandemic broke out. They became known for their weekend gigs at Parque Mexico, where they delighted masked and socially distanced fans. They were also invited to perform an 'at home' live session at KEXP and were selected as the official band for the international music conference WOMEX 2020 and 2022.
In 2025, the group accompanied Gogol Bordello as support band on ten concerts in Europe. Now they are performing at the ZMF in Freiburg for the first time.
