Oberlinden Fountain

Historic fountain on Oberlindenplatz with a statue of the Virgin Mary and an old lime tree - a charming landmark and popular meeting place in Freiburg's old town.

The Oberlindenbrunnen is one of the most charming places in Freiburg's old town. It is located in the historic Oberlinden quarter at the fork of Salzstraße and Herrenstraße, one of the oldest areas of the city. A fountain is documented at this location as early as 1535, which underlines the long history of this place. Over the course of time, the fountain has been renovated several times, including in the 19th century and after the destruction of the Second World War. The peaceful atmosphere that characterizes the square despite its central location is characteristic. A statue of the Virgin Mary adorns the fountain and gives it a special aura. Right next to it is the eponymous lime tree, which has dominated the square since 1729 and is considered a landmark of the district. Oberlinden was an important meeting place for trade and crafts in the Middle Ages. The area has remained lively to this day. Small stores, cafés and historic buildings frame the square, which is a popular place to stay for locals and visitors alike.
