The tango is actually a dance that is accompanied by a few typical instruments (piano, double bass, two violins, bandoneon). It originated around 1880 from a mixture of different musical influences in the harbor bars of Buenos Aires, where immigrants from all over the world who had not managed to arrive in the middle of society landed. Initially only played and danced instrumentally, it was soon also sung. This dance, which is characterized by contrasts such as soft melodies and fiery rhythms, was long considered wicked and was forbidden by the church. It is therefore all the more astonishing that Martín Palmeri has achieved a wonderful synthesis of Catholic liturgy and Latin American dance with his Mistango and created a mass that is probably unique in its form. The composition blurs the boundaries between the sacred, the secular, the popular and the classical. Adios Nonino is a composition for orchestra by Astor Piazzolla, which he wrote to mark the sudden death of his father. In our concert, it will be performed in the version for choir by Néstor Zadoff.
This rather unusual program is complemented by pure instrumental music from South America in the typical instrumentation mentioned above.
