Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra

With great warmth - She was only 19 years old when Joana Mallwitz stepped into the orchestra pit at short notice and saved an opera performance. The Heidelberg ensemble had long since realized that this was the start of an extraordinary career. Just a few years later, Mallwitz became the youngest female general music director in Europe. Since her celebrated debut at the 2020 Salzburg Festival with Mozart's "Così fan tutte", she has been one of the internationally outstanding conductors of her generation. Named "Conductor of the Year" by the magazine "Opernwelt" in 2019 and awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2023, she has been at the helm of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin since the 2023/24 season.

Mallwitz appreciates the openness of the orchestra, which is steeped in tradition: "There is a good foundation of willingness to take risks, openness and curiosity - I like that." Even before taking up her post, she got to know the orchestra through guest conducting engagements, including works by Peter Tchaikovsky, whose music she particularly loves. "On the one hand, there is this traditional, dark, medium-voiced sound, with great warmth, a carrying cantabile, but also an astringency," says Mallwitz, describing the orchestra's culture. "At the same time, they have a very fresh way of making music, a great love of detail, tempo and articulation. That's a combination I look for everywhere when I play music." An ideal profile for Tchaikovsky's emotionally charged 5th Symphony as well as for Antonín Dvorák's powerful, melodious cello concerto. The latter is one of the favorite works of French star cellist Gautier Capuçon, who is celebrated for his depth of expression, intensity and cantabile lines - qualities that suit this concerto in a special way.
