The construction of the barrages for hydropower utilization between Basel and Iffezheim has significantly increased the risk of flooding on the Upper Rhine, especially for the Karlsruhe, Mannheim/Ludwigshafen and Worms conurbations. As the original floodplains have been cut off from the Rhine, the discharge of the Rhine has increased and accelerated. Below the last barrage in Iffezheim, the Rhine can only discharge these larger water masses between the flood embankments to a limited extent.
The Integrated Rhine Program (IRP) of the state of Baden-Württemberg is therefore creating 13 flood retention areas between Basel and Mannheim on former floodplains. Andreas Hendrickx, an employee of the Regional Administrative Council of Freiburg, will give an overview of the need for flood protection on the Upper Rhine and the implementation status of the IRP. - Registration required.
