"From Saul to Paulus" - how does one go from being a persecutor of Christians to a follower of Jesus?
This exciting story is told in the oratorio "Paul" by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.
Mendelssohn was impressed by the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, who had set stories from the life of Jesus to music in his oratorios. Bach's works were just being rediscovered in Mendelssohn's time after they had almost been forgotten. In his own works, Mendelssohn therefore told stories from the Bible in his own way.
The "Paulus" was already a very popular piece in his time, and even today it impresses with its magnificent melodies and musical ingenuity.

Concert educator Britta Riedmiller has adapted the work to make it accessible to young people (from the age of 5). The Freiburg Martinschor performs it as a family concert in the Martinskirche on Rathausplatz.
