Freiburg's most beautiful alley: the street "Konviktstraße
For many, it is the most beautiful shopping street in the city - and not just because of the large selection of boutiques, concept stores and owner-managed shops. It is the mix of charm, location, history and skilful urban planning that makes "Konviktstraße" Freiburg's favourite place. Just 300 metres long, it leads north from Schwabentor (Swabian Gate) towards Schlossbergsteg, making it the perfect link between the city and nature. In the summer, the blue vine entwines itself in delicate purple flower garlands along the alley, where many craftsmen had their workshops in the Middle Ages. Today, perfectly restored façades create an enchanting old town flair. Destroyed during the Second World War, the street was not renovated until the early 1970s - but it was so clever and well thought out that it is now considered a prime example of successful neighbourhood planning.
