Loss of democratic culture - Christians have a responsibility
Basic democratic values are coming under increasing pressure in Europe. Authoritarian populist movements are gaining influence and questioning the liberal order in many places. This makes it all the more urgent to ask what responsibility society and Christians in particular bear today for the preservation of democracy.
The fourth event in the "Baden Dialogue - Church and State in Europe" series will be dedicated to this topic on Thursday, March 5 from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. The keynote speeches and panel discussion will be broadcast via livestream at www.ebfr.de/badischer-dialog.
Former German President and former GDR civil rights activist Joachim Gauck is expected to be a special guest. In his keynote speech, he will talk about "Democracy under pressure - our responsibility in times of uncertainty and threat". Inken Gallner, President of the Federal Labor Court, will also give a keynote speech on "The crisis of liberal democracy based on the rule of law".
Exchange forums and a panel discussion will enable an in-depth debate on the loss of democratic culture and the special responsibility of Christians. Inken Gallner, the Bishop of Baden, Prof. Dr. Heike Springhart, Archbishop Stephan Burger and Frank Richter, former member of the Saxon state parliament and head of the State Center for Political Education in Meissen, will take part in the panel discussion.
An event organized by the Department of Church in Society and Politics at the Archbishop's Pastoral Office in Freiburg in cooperation with the Protestant Academy Baden and the Catholic Academy Freiburg.
