7 Ways to Cool Off in Summer

In the summer, temperatures in the Breisgau region can easily exceed the 86 degree mark. If you need to cool off after a stroll through the city during your vacation, you’ll find numerous possibilities in Freiburg. Here we present seven options.

#1 Go to the Schauinsland

A pleasant wind blows on the Schauinsland near Freiburg. A cable car takes you comfortably up to the top, but climbing the summit on foot has its advantages: The path through the forest is also refreshingly cool. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent view of the Feldberg, the Rhine plain, the Upper Black Forest, and – in good weather – the distant Alpine chain.

#2 Take a walk on the Schlossberg

You shouldn't miss a walk on the Schlossberg. From the Schlossberg Tower, you have a 360-degree view of Freiburg. In the evening, it’s a good idea to stop for a beer in the “Kastaniengarten” on the Schlossberg. If you’re also looking for accommodation in Freiburg, you can stay at a Freiburg hotel near the Schlossberg and enjoy the surroundings every day.

#3 Go to a museum

There are numerous museums in Freiburg. A visit isn’t just recommended on rainy vacation days, but also on hot summer days. If you can’t stand it any longer when it’s 86 degrees outside, you can cool off inside while also learning something about the city. The Augustinermuseum is one of the coolest museums in the city.

#4 Jump in the quarry pond

We hope you packed your swimsuit! On hot summer days, jumping into the cool water is a real relief. Looking for a swimming hole? There are numerous lakes in and around Freiburg. If you don't want to go swimming, you can sit down by the Dreisam and dip your feet in the water.

#5 Go to the Reading Garden in the Stühlinger

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, put your feet up, listen to nature, and dive into other worlds with a good book: You can really relax in the Reading Garden in the Stühlinger/Freiburg district.

#6 Lay down under a shady tree

When the sun is burning, it’s high time to seek shelter under shady trees – so, hurry, to the park! The Seepark (Lake Park) Freiburg, with a total area of 10 hectares, is an excellent place for this. Of course, the other parks in Freiburg are always worth a visit, too!

#7 Cool your feet in the Bächle

The Freiburg Bächle in the streets and alleys not only lend the old town an extraordinary charm; on hot summer days these waterways are also perfect for cooling your feet.
