Freiburg in bad weather

A sightseeing walk through Freiburg in the rain or snow

With mostly tropical nights and over 1,700 hours of sunshine per year, Freiburg retains its undisputed status as the sunniest city in Germany. A few rainy days a year are still possible, of course, and winter can be seen in Freiburg – even if only briefly. But things never get boring in our city. Discover our suggestions for bad weather – just in case:

Morning:

Is the rain coming down outside, or it is a cold winter day? Choose one of our lovely restaurants or cafés and start your day with an extended brunch

Freiburg’s historic old town is wonderful to look at, even on gray days. The small ‘gässle’ alleys with countless owner-operated shops, boutiques, and delicatessens invite you to stroll around. Of course, you can also find large department stores and specialty retailers to shop around.

Freiburg’s small yet excellent museums such as the Archaeological Museum and the renowned Augustinermuseum provide you with the perfect shelter on a dreary weather day. Whether archaeological finds or artistic and cultural-historical collections, the select treasures of the exhibits are beautifully presented.

Afternoon:

One of Freiburg’s small, extraordinary museums is the Zinnfigurenklause (tin figure cabinet). Situated directly in the Swabian gate, it's the only way to explore the medieval city gate from the inside. But the exhibition is also truly remarkable: More than 10,000 tiny, lovingly detailed tin figures are actors in historical scenes, stories, and fairy tales.

In addition to numerous exhibition rooms, studios, and private art museums, Freiburg’s galleries offer space for art with a broad spectrum of paintings, sculptures, and installations.

If you are looking for pure relaxation, you will find it in one of our thermal baths. Simply enjoy and recharge your batteries!

Evening:

Art in every shape and form is simply part of the true Freiburg lifestyle. Whether big or small stages, jazz, classical, or hip-hop, you are sure to find the right event for you in our event flyer.

As early as 1770, Freiburg’s actors brought to life various roles to present classics and comedies on the stage of the Kornhaus, which was built in the 15th century as a guild and dance establishment. Even today Freiburg’s theaters offer wonderful backdrops, such as the Theater Freiburg, the former swimming pool of the Theater im Marienbad, and the vaulted cellar of the Wallgrabentheater.

You can experience a fantastic performance with popcorn and soda on a cozy night at the movies.
