10 Tips for a Golden Fall in Freiburg
#1 Enjoy local produce at a seasonal wine tavern
The “Straussenwirtschaften” are finally open again! “Straussis” are seasonally open wine taverns, typical of the Baden region, where winemakers can market their products directly. There’s the producer's own wine, Neuer Süßer, and Baden home cooking such as Bibbeliskäs (quark), Brägele (fried potatoes), Schäufele (roasted pork shoulder), sausage salad, onion quiche and Flammkuchen (tarte flambée). After a hike in the fresh air – on one of these routes, for example – a visit to the Straussi is exactly what the tired body needs.
#2 Sample onion tart and a glass of Neuer Süßer
The fall season is harvest season. Many ripe fruits and vegetables are just waiting to be made into fine food and drink. This is when the connoisseur can really enjoy themselves in the many restaurants in Freiburg and the surrounding area. There’s almost nothing better than enjoying hearty onion quiche with a glass of Neuer Süßer on a golden autumn day. If you’re interested in wine, we also recommend a wine tasting in one of the region's vineyards.
#3 Try a pumpkin dish or pumpkin carving
For those looking for a seasonal, healthy diet, in the fall, there’s no way around the pumpkin. The pumpkin is incredibly versatile, and irreplaceable in the autumn kitchen. Freiburg’s restaurants now have various dishes using the vegetable which not only scores points in terms of taste, but is also rich in nutrients. If you don’t like eating pumpkin, you can still use it to carve some wonderful scary jack-o'-lanterns for Halloween.
#4 Celebrate Halloween
The folk customs on Halloween, the evening before All Hallows’ Day, are mainly celebrated in America. But now, more and more Halloween customs of US origin can be found in continental Europe. Starting on September 22, Halloween is in the air at Europa-Park in Rust! One highlight of the Halloween season is the SWR3 Halloween Party at Europa-Park on October 31. On this evening, several different events will take place in Freiburg – and one thing is for certain: it won’t be boring!
#5 Experience the Ganter Oktoberfest
Think they only have Oktoberfest in Munich? Think again! Freiburg also has its own Oktoberfest: the annual Ganter Oktoberfest on the brewery grounds close to the city center. In a dirndl or a pair of lederhosen, you can enjoy Bavarian delicacies to hearty live music. Of course, you can also enjoy the tasty, regionally brewed beers in the Ganter brewery and in our other breweries.
#6 Take a dip and unwind at a thermal spa
For those who want to treat themselves to some quiet relaxation in Freiburg in the fall, we recommend a visit to the thermal baths. There, you can dive into a world of well-being: swimming, relaxing in the sauna, resting, getting a massage, eating and drinking – a visit to the thermal baths leaves nothing to be desired. This can be wonderfully combined with an exciting discovery tour through the Black Forest, a short vacation, or a wellness weekend.
#7 Explore the Black Forest
A visit to Freiburg isn’t complete without an exploration tour through the surrounding area. Whether mountain biking, hiking, or cycling, in the varied region surrounding Freiburg there are countless possibilities for leisure activities. Go on your own exploration tour through the Black Forest, or try out one of our suggestions!
#8 Look down on the clouds from Schauinsland mountain
Setting your sights high? Experience Germany’s longest cable car and soar 1,284 meters in 20 minutes to Freiburg’s highest address: the Black Forest mountain of Schauinsland. There, you can enjoy the impressive panoramic view and take great walks through the colorful outdoors. Instead of returning downhill by the cable car, there’s also the Downinsland route, where you can ride high-tech scooters down into the valley. A very special sporting adventure!
#9 Fall walk along the Dreisam River
The Dreisam River flows through Freiburg like a silver ribbon. The stress of everyday life is forgotten as soon as you walk along its banks. In the fall, visitors can walk through the beautiful landscapes, collect chestnuts, or just enjoy the beautiful view on a bench. Where you start and end your Dreisam walk is up to you. This way, it’s possible to walk into the city, through it, or out of it.
#10 Take an autumn stroll
Shopping fans can get their money’s worth in Freiburg. There are countless shops and boutiques in the city center and the Old Town to discover during a stroll through the city. Tired feet can relax during a break at the Münstermarkt (Cathedral market): with a glass of wine and an original Freiburg bratwurst, you’ll quickly regain your strength.
